About the District

Single Hero

Our students have access to programs, activities, and services that allow them to achieve success in the classroom, on stage, at the game, and in the community.

We are proud of our many curriculum offerings, as well as the great accomplishments of our students. The success of our students is a reflection of the quality of education our staff continues to provide. Our teachers’ continued efforts to embrace and implement new programs and state mandates are the reason why our district is able to make progress. The district looks to the future as it embraces the ever-changing landscape of education and as well as maintaining financial stability, strong leadership, and quality education.

Mission + Vision

It is the mission of Sidney City Schools to inspire, empower, and prepare our students for their best future.

Our vision is to meet the needs of all students in a safe, respectful, and responsible learning community.

Our District

Our district is made up of approximately 3,300 students, 6 schools, 200 teachers, and 150 classified staff such as aides, custodians, bus drivers, cooks, and secretaries. Additionally, each school has a security officer or School Resource Officer and a trained emergency response team for student and staff safety.

Emerson and Longfellow serve students in grades K-2. Northwood serves students in grades 3-4. Sidney Middle School serves students in grades fifth through eighth. Sidney High School serves students in grades ninth through twelfth. Alternative education opportunities are available for students who require it. Additionally, high school students may be accepted into the Opportunity School program, available for students who don't fit the traditional day-school model.

Sidney City Schools has a preschool program housed at Whittier Early Childhood Center. Serving both students on IEPs and those who are typically developing starting at age 3, WECC introduces learning through play and exploration. Students with disabilities attend preschool for free, while those who are typically developing pay tuition on a sliding scale.

In addition to quality education, the Sidney City School district is proud to offer students more than seventy extra-curricular activities. Starting as early as fifth and sixth grade, we offer our students a variety of boys, girls, and co-ed sports like football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, fast pitch, tennis, cross country, track, bowling, volleyball, and swimming & diving. Additionally, we provide our students the opportunity to become members and leaders of clubs like the National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Academia, FCCLA, FFA, Student Government, and more. Students may also choose to become involved in our highly successful music program by taking band, choir, or orchestra, or trying out for the high school musical which occasionally invites middle school students to become involved.

Sidney High School offers its students more than 18 College Credit Plus and Advanced Placement courses, allowing students to take and earn credit for college-level courses while staying at Sidney High School. The greatest benefit both of these options provide students is that many are able to graduate high school with enough credits to enter into college as a sophomore or junior. Some students are able to obtain an associate's degree in tandem with their high school diploma.

In 2013, for the first time since the 1950s, Sidney High School offered a vo-ag program. Our unique program revolves around the growing food science and technology industry - one that is especially growing within the Sidney/Shelby County community. Additionally, the vo-ag program introduces traditional agricultural experiences to our students who mostly reside in the city limits.

Starting with the 2021-2022 school year, Sidney City Schools offers the Jacket Virtual Academy (JaVA). JaVA is a virtual learning experience for students in grades 5-12. Unlike other online learning programs, JaVA is operated by Sidney City Schools and administered by long-time Sidney educators who will work closely with and provide support to students and their families.
